Whale Watching

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

Today was by far the most epic day! We started the day early with a whale watching boat trip. Jayce has a connection to a man named Ricky who apparently owns a couple of boats and regularly takes people on tours. We even got a discounted price since Jayce has gone so many times on Ricky’s boat. Ricky picked us up at the Marina Cabo San Lucas. San Lucas is known as the backdoor to Hollywood as a lot of celebrities have their mansions there. Apparently, that marina is also the most expensive marina to dock your boat which explains the fancy yachts.

The water was a stunning color of turquoise and our first scenic point was a rock formation that contained the Arch named El Arco. El Arco is the most famous landmark in Cabo and is where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez. Ricky snapped some great photos of us there.

There were two beaches we passed nestled among the rock formations. The first beach was Lover’s beach since it’s where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet. An 18th century legend has it that the name also originates from when a woman and a Japanese sailor fell in love after the woman rescued the sailor. Ricky informed us that the beach had incredible snorkeling and swimming as well. He had brought along some tortillas that he gave us to feed the fish. As I broke bits and pieces, the fish aggressively came swimming to the surface to eat it. Within seconds, there were tons of fish fighting for food. Ricky’s boat had a glass bottom so we could see all of the fish beneath. He was able to name every fish and even the average price of the fish. Fishing is strictly prohibited in the area though to preserve the area otherwise fishermen would make a killing.

The second beach we passed, contrasting Lover’s Beach, was Divorce Beach. It is still a beautiful beach, it just has such aggressive waves that make it one of the most dangerous spots in Cabo and not swimmable. To get to Divorce Beach which is on the Pacific Ocean side, there is a small opening where waves come crashing through known as Pirate’s Cave. It’s name comes from the fact that Cabo used to attract a lot of pirates who would store their treasure in the cave.

As we got farther out into the ocean we started to focus on the real reason we came out in the boat - whale watching! There were quite a few humpback whales out on the water today and we caught sight of at least 5! The first two we caught sight of the blowhole. Apparently the male humpback cannot go more than 15 minutes at a time so if you spotted him, you were almost guaranteed to see him again. The whales put on a spectacular show! At first it was a lot of flipping fins and tails but eventually we found a pack of 3 swimming together. These whales were continuously jumping out of the water and doing full backflips. I had never been this close to a whale and it was incredible to see the sheer size of the mammals and the sound they made as they came crashing back into the water. To get a better view Jacey, River, and I climbed to the top of the boat for the best views on the boat. Just yesterday I was watching the whales from the palacio wishing I could be closer and I guess I manifested it, because here I was! Whale watching was definitely worth it!

Nothing could trump the excitement of seeing a whale that close so our next stop was to relax by getting massages at the SandBar. We had booked appointments for 6 of us to receive massages. The SandBar was off of the most popular beach in Cabo that is packed with tons and tons of tourists, mainly college students on spring break. I saw a man selling mango with Tajin and immediately jumped to purchase one. It was very delicious and also a little messy as I dropped Tajin and chili everywhere. This was my first massage ever so I didn’t know what to expect. I enjoyed it thoroughly but wished there was not the loud pulsating music the entire time.

We stopped by a glass shop on the way home where we got to watch them blow glass and could even purchase the creations they made in front of you. I have always wanted to try my hand blowing glass and these guys made it look so easy. It definitely wasn’t a one man job and we watched them tag team to create different parts of what would come to life as a Tortuga Borracha or drunk turtle. The drunk turtles were too cute with a tequila bottle in their hand so I purchased one to take back to my dad.

In the evening, we returned to the palacio to hop in the pool and swim in the beach. Leo, the house caretaker and his girlfriend cooked us a lovely dinner that evening and it was delicious to have home cooked Mexican food with Horchata.
