Henry arrived today and everyone was very excited to see him! He had graduated in the fall and no one had seen him since so we all piled up in the car and drove to the airport. The plan was to pick up Henry and then go to the historic Cabo San Jose and downtown Cabo San Lucas and then stay the night at Jacey’s mom’s place near downtown.
Historic San Jose was lined with cute little souvenir shops and tiny roads decorated with the colorful streamers. There was a San Jose del Cabo sign that we had to stop and pose for our tourist photos. Behind the sign there was the historic San Jose Mission where mass was going on. We walked around to many art galleries and shops admiring all the street art. Jacey and Emily caught sight of a stand selling to-go margaritas so we stopped for that and some light breakfast.
Cabo San Lucas is flocked with American tourists and the place people go to when they say they are going to Cabo. It is also one of the hottest spring break locations for college students. It has all of the huge resorts and fancy mansions that celebrities own. In contrast to the rough desert landscape, Cabo San Lucas has manicured green grass, tall palm trees, and bright pink bougainvilleas. Jacey’s mom owned a house nestled between the big resorts that she usually rents out when she is not there. Her house was gorgeous! It was situated on a hill that overlooked the beach and was lined with tall palm trees. The pool and hot tub overlooked the beach and I can only imagine how beautiful it would be at sunrise. We immediately hit the beach that was just below the house and had fun for hours boogie-boarding and playing in the water. Once we decided we were done burning in the hot sun, we moved to swim in the pool at Jacey’s house.
For dinner that night we went to a restaurant called Las Guacamayas. That was our first meal out. They are known for their tacos and had a very good selection of seafood. The lobster was calling my name but I ordered 3 tacos instead - octopus, marlin, and shrimp. All the tacos were very good and I enjoyed the spicy habanero hot sauce with them.
The restaurant was located in the heart of downtown Cabo with all the bars and clubs. There were also tons of pharmacies advertising Viagra and people standing outside trying to lure tourists in. At least every other shop was a pharmacy since the drug rules here are very relaxed and American tourists can get basically any drug without a prescription.
All the bars had open patio seating, each one blasting their own loud music. The first bar we started with was Señor Frogs. Inside, there was a woman dancing on the table and singing karaoke with the larger groups of people. Every so often if they sang loud enough the bartender would give them free shots. It was still early to hit other bars so we decided to seek out the churro cart. We walked around this huge marina which was apparently where we would be coming tomorrow for our boat ride. There were many fancy yachts docked there for the night. We passed what looked like an abandoned hotel and Jacey informed us that the hotel was started by a man who then passed away 20 years ago and since then it has become infested with about 600 feral cats and no one has bothered to do anything with it.
We walked around the pier for about an hour and it was very nice to get away from the loud bar scene and enjoy the cool ocean breeze. There were many Mexican men who lined the streets constantly trying to sell us weed or cocaine but we politely declined. We never found the churro cart so we went to another bar called the Swing Bar. I don’t know if that is what it is actually called but it did have swings which we sat at that were very fun. I ordered a mango margarita and it was heaven. I almost ordered a second. It was so good but I wanted to save space in case we went to another bar.
We eventually found the churro cart but by that time it was closed and the bars started having $25 cover charges which is personally more than I would order in drinks so we Ubered home and crashed at Jacey’s place for the night. Twas a fun night out in downtown Cabo!
