Obidos & Fatima

Obidos is a very small town about an hour North of Lisbon. In the middle is Historic Obidos that is still framed by castle walls remaining from the Moors almost 700 years ago. All that remains of the Obidos castle is the walls that encompass the city.

The town is characterized by whitewashed walls that are framed by white and gold trims. Many have large pink bougainvilleas that are spilling over the walls.

We started our day with pastel de natas from a cafe. These were the worst ones we have had so far as I didn't like how mushy the exterior texture was. Another famous thing to do in Obidos was try the liqueur shots in a chocolate shot glass. Specifically, the place to try them at was House of Chocolate. House of Chocolate was a very nice chocolate shop and they had a Spiderman figurine that was made completely from chocolate! When we received the chocolate shots Babbaloo had to ask " do we eat it like Pani puri?"

The answer was take it however you like and since Alex sipped his shot we just followed in his lead. The chocolate shots were very good. I loved the cherry liqueur and Alex even bought a tiny bottle to take home with him.

Next, we drove to the city of Fatima. Fatima is most known for the sanctuary of Fatima where Mary appeared in an apparition on 5 different occasions. The area was set up as a huge square with the chapel on one end, the basilica on another and in the middle stood the sanctuary. The entire town was based around this one area. If I was religious, I think this town would hold more meaning for me, but since I am not, It felt like there was nothing to do. Alex, of course, planned to spend the whole afternoon at church and rosary praying so I found a nice bench and parked there for several hours while I waited. I did wander into the basilica, chapel, and shrine to see it a couple of times.

For dinner that night we ate at an upscale Italian restaurant called Sabores D'Italia with a Michelin 2023 plague on the door. The restaurant didn't have any Michelin stars but it was a Michelin recommended restaurant. I saw homemade Italian pasta on the menu and I already knew what I was ordering. I ordered the shrimp pansoti with mascarpone and dill sauce. It was divine! I am telling you homemade pasta hits different. It is so good! I can never eat pasta from a box again. Everything about the meal was delicious from the bread that came with truffle and lemon butter to dessert. Of course we had to order tiramisu with a chocolate mousse duet. It was truly a 5 star meal from me!
