Aveiro is a small town about thirty minutes south of Porto that is most known for its canals and boats called barcos moliceiros that mirror the ones in Venice. The style of the buildings fall under the Arts Noveau style. We walked along the canals admiring the pretty houses. I really wanted to ride the boat but Alex said no boat so we just wandered around the pretty town.
Aveiro is famous for these eggs called Ovos Moles which translates to soft eggs and is nothing more than eggs and sugar. They were originally made by the nuns in the convents. We had to try them of course. I just wanted one to try but Alex bought a packet of 10. They were so gross! It tasted like overly sweetened egg yolk and was not good at all. The exterior was a chewy egg- white texture. They were so bad none of us could eat more than one and we gave the rest to a homeless woman.
Aveiro has a beach and is known for these striped houses in an area called Costa Nova. Sadly, the houses were too far so we just had to admire the monument of one of the striped houses turned on its head. Aveiro was a pretty town and I really admired the canals there just wasn’t much to do.
The drive to Peniche where we would be staying for the evening was two hours from Aveiro. There we finally got to go to the beach! It was late in the day and the weather wasn’t that great so we didn’t see any surfers. I am sure when the conditions are right there must be tons of surfers there. The beach was nice to take a stroll along. I didn’t go in the water since the weather was quite cool and the water was even colder. I definitely regret not jumping in but we didn’t have towels either. Next time. The beach is my happy place so I was just glad to be there and listen to the waves crash on the beach.
Today was our last night in Portugal so Alex treated us to a Portuguese restaurant called Tasca da Joel. The food was divine! I had a fried cod with mussel rice and loved it! We have had a lot of good eats this trip and it makes the whole trip so much more memorable. Always down to eat at fancy restaurants :)
