Chemould

Nishant was in town this week and I had seen him perform at the NCPA last night. Today, I was going to grab lunch with him and visit an art museum. As for the cousin count, I have seen 6 out of a million so far.

Nishant had wanted to give me a traditional Parsi dining experience but sadly the place he had chosen was closed so we met at a thali restaurant called Chetan instead. I have no clue how I have been getting around by taxi but I know the three commands of left, right, and seedha. Well it's one thing to know the commands and also be able to navigate using Google maps. Definitely missed a left turn and gave up so I walked instead. Kala Goda area was empty on a Sunday. In fact, the streets were so devoid of cars that boys were playing cricket in the middle of the road. Kala Goda is a very pretty area with lots of greenery and ornate architecture. I really want to return back soon just to admire all of the pretty buildings like the Bombay College. There was even one of my fwends sitting on the sidewalk munching away.

As a small eater I definitely don't think I should order a thali but I love the variety of dishes and how everything is plated. The thali I had at Chetan was a Rajasthani thali. It was pure veg and not spicy at all sadly. The vegetable was very suspicious. The taste was fine, it was just funny looking and the texture was off putting. I loved everything else though. I was served so many desserts from jalebi, laddu, and kheer! I think I think up pretty well with Nishant’s help in the end.

As an artist, Nishant was dying to see the Chemould art exhibition. This gallery was tucked away in an ordinary building that was run-down. Nishant made a comment about how the most elite art galleries are usually hidden from the public and then will be super fancy. Sure enough, when we reached the third floor there was a heavy wooden door to the art gallery and the exhibit tucked inside.

The art on display featured artists who depicted resistance in different mediums. In one art piece I learned about Communalism in India with Nishant also explaining it to me. We had arrived at the perfect time for a guided tour so we followed along. Since it was the 60th celebration of the gallery, several works from the archive were on display now too. My overall opinion of the gallery was that it was very small and had more modern works. In general there was also not a whole lot of art.

For the rest of the evening I hung out at Daniel’s house chatting with his mother who is hilarious! She told me many stories of Daniel while absolutely destroying him too. At one point she gave him a single compliment to balance out her insults. She was good fun. I saw his cute little parrot Candy as well!
