An Uluru Sunset

There was no better way to round off the 25 day Contiki tour than with one last sunset together sipping on champagne and nibbling on an assortment of wine and cheese.

I had stayed at the hostel the entire day while the group went on a day trip to Kings Canyon for a hike. Matt would not stop rubbing in the fact that they finally went for a proper 6.4 km and I wasn't there. I sure missed out but I would rather my ankle heal then beat it to death like yesterday.

I did join the group for a beautiful sunset at the same point we had watched the sunrise yesterday. Everyone was asking me if I had PTSD being back at the very spot I had sprained my ankle. Matt would not stop making fun of me and telling me that I limped like Terry Fox. He said ask any Canadian they would know who Terry Fox was. Terry Fox was a famous Canadian who had cancer and then had his leg removed. In efforts to raise awareness about cancer, he attempted to run from East to West however his cancer came back and he did not make it. Therefore, every year kids in school have to do a run in memory of Terry Fox to finish his run. Matt gained a lot of amusement from calling me Terry Fox and even even renamed me in my contacts as Terry Fox.

The sunset point was crowded by the time we arrived with many tour buses all from the same company. There is exactly one tour bus company that has a monopoly in Uluru. There are no taxis or anything, you have to book a tour or shuttle to get around. There were tables allocated to each tour and ours was waiting for us when we arrived. The driver set up a pretty cute spread of cheese, crackers, and veggies. He also popped open some champagne for all of us to sip on as the sun set. All of the other tour groups had a similar setup and the majority of the crowd were elderly people. Some of the elderly people even had seats set up to watch the sunset. One elderly lady came up to our group at some point asking what a bunch of youngsters are doing with them oldies. Uluru is an expensive town so it adds up that there are no youngsters. It would be hard to come here as a solo traveler as well.

I finally got to see the sun cast a red glow on the Uluru rock as I had seen in the photos. It was a beautiful moment and we made sure to take tons of sunset photos!
